The Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) in Meerut is a prestigious arm of the Indian Army responsible for the breeding, training, and care of military animals, primarily horses, mules, and dogs. The Meerut facility plays a vital role in ensuring that all army’s animal units are healthy, agile and ready for military operations in areas like high altitudes and difficult terrains where mechanized transport in impractical.

The corps was initially raised in Bengal in 1779 as the ‘Stud Department.’ The 1947 partition led to division of assets of the veterinary. Meerut is home to one of the key centers of RVC. The team here includes expert veterinarians, animal handlers and support staff who work together to breed high-quality animal and make them fit for military service.

The RVC has been instrumental in providing veterinary assistance to rural areas in Jammu and Kashmir and North East India under Project Sadbhavana.
