The heart of every Meeruthi swells up with pride and patriotism when the Revolt of 1857 is talked about. The city served a highly important purpose during the revolt when the British captured many parts of India. Built in the memory on the 1857 revolt is the Shaheed Smarak, one of the highly well-maintained places in the city.
Government Freedom Struggle Museum
Shaheed Smarak is a historic site in Meerut that houses a museum, The Government Freedom Struggle Museum which was setup in 1997. The museum keeps secure a crucial preserve of documents that are used for informative purposes. Apart from that, it also has huge paintings of freedom fighters as well as artefacts in its galleries.

The entire museum is divided into five galleries out of which three are operational.
Gallery 1: The first gallery has materials that depict the events that led to the war. Be it the infamous incident of the soldiers refusing to use cartridges because they were made with beef or paintings of elusive Fakir who was actively involved in war, the gallery has it all.
Gallery 2: The second gallery has large exhibits and paintings with depictions of the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. You can also gape at paintings of Rani Lakshmi Bai, Sati Choura Ghat and Lucknow Bagh. Collectables like swords are also on display.
Gallery 3: The third gallery is a delight for every history lover with inscriptions of past including ancient civilization of Meerut and its freedom struggle.
Apart from the galleries, the museum also has a large compound which is serene and immersed in lush greenery. An important site for the Indian freedom struggle, Shaheed Smarak in Meerut is a must visit for every proud Indian.
