Meerut is all set to become a hub for sports education and research with the establishment of the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University, a landmark initiative by the Uttar Pradesh government. Named after India’s legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand, the university aims to provide world-class training, education, and research opportunities for aspiring athletes across the state.
Spanning several acres in Meerut, the university boasts cutting-edge infrastructure, including stadiums, training grounds, gyms, hostels, and research labs. The first phase of construction, which is scheduled to be completed by March 2026, will feature fully functional sports complexes and academic buildings, providing students with an immersive learning and training environment.
Spread over 100 acres (with an initial 91.38-acre development), the facility will offer courses in 12 sports disciplines, featuring modern infrastructure like a synthetic hockey ground, football ground, swimming pool, and a cycling velodrome.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology has already started academic operations under temporary facilities, with intentions to move to the permanent campus for the next academic year.
With the first phase ready by March 2026, Meerut is poised to become a centre of sports excellence, echoing the legacy of India’s legendary sports icon.
