Trial runs of Namo Bharat train commenced between Meerut South and Shatabdi Nagar on February 9, 2025. This will serve as the additional 6-km section in the train’s route. With this, Meerut will become the first city to have a local metro system that will be operated on the same infrastructure being used for Namo Bharat transit.
According to a statement by NCR Transportation Corporation (NCRTC), Namo Bharat trains will bring the operational corridor closer to the heart of Meerut city. Initially, the trains will be operated manually to check for civil structure compatibility. As the trails progress, NRCTC will conduct more comprehensive evaluations.
The Shatabdi Nagar station will become the second Namo Bharat station in Meerut to serve both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro, making it a key transit point. It will also facilitate smooth transit of people in the area and also connectivity towards both Delhi and Modipuram. The Shatabdi Nagar station also has entry-exit gates at two gates on either sides of the roads for commuters’ convenience.
The Meerut Metro is a 23-km long corridor that consists of 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground sections. Both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services will be available at Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram stations.
With trials already underway between Meerut South and Shatabdi Nagar section, the operation section will extend to 61 kms and also reduce travel time.
