
Meerut is a city with a rich cultural and historic heritage. This March, the city is about to witness a one of its kind theatrical show, The Ramayana, by Shri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra drama company.
Shri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra’s renowned dance-drama, ‘Shri Ram,’ has been a cornerstone of Indian cultural performances for nearly seven decades. Conceived in 1957 by the esteemed arts patron Sumitra Charat Ram, this theatrical masterpiece brings to life the epic journey of Lord Ram, from his divine birth to his triumphant return and coronation. Directed by Shobha Deepak Singh, the drama blends classical and folk dance forms including Bharatnatyam and Mayurbhanj Chau.
The drama portrays Lord Ram’s life right from his birth to exile to abduction of Sita, loyalty of Lord Hanuman and the battle with Ravana. It depicts in detail the dilemmas faced by Lord Ram and others, resonating with the audiences. The drama is traditionally performed in New Delhi but the previous performances in Meerut have met with great enthusiasm and praises from the audience, owing to the city’s deep connection with Ramayana.
