Delhi and Meerut are all set to witness a major boost in public transport infrastructure as the Sarai Kale Khan station of the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor is expected to be inaugurated on 17 September 2025. This will mark the operational launch of the Delhi terminal of the 82.15-km high-speed corridor, bringing the ambitious project closer to full completion.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS, also known as the Namo Bharat train service, is India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail system. While a 55-km stretch from Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South is already operational, the Sarai Kale Khan station has so far remained a missing link. Its opening will finally give Delhiites direct access to the corridor from the heart of the city.
With the launch of Sarai Kale Khan, passengers will be able to travel from Delhi to Meerut in under one hour – a journey that currently takes more than two hours by road during peak traffic. Even with stops at intermediate stations, the seamless ride will redefine commuting between the two cities and benefit thousands of daily travelers.
The Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station is:
- 215 metres long, 50 metres wide, and 15 metres tall.
- Equipped with modern ticketing systems and digital passenger information boards
- Designed with universal accessibility features like elevators, escalators, and tactile flooring.
- Planned with dedicated spaces for last-mile connectivity, including e-rickshaw and cab drop-off zones.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS is not just about speed; it’s also about sustainability. By offering a fast, safe, and reliable alternative to cars and buses, the system is expected to increase the share of public transport on the route from 37% to 63%. This will help decongest Delhi roads, cut vehicular pollution, and contribute to India’s climate goals.
